1971 Bronco project

Post by OrthmannJ »

Well, since I don't have much vintage Crew Cab content to provide since I don't actually have one, I thought I would start a thread on something I do.
It's actually not my rig, but I'm overseeing the restoration.

My Father-in-law owns three vintage Broncos.
The blue and white "wagon":

The green half cab:

And the green... parts rig:

Given the popularity (and increased value) of these things he's decided to build the green one and make it into a roadster so he has one of each type.

He's shooting for a Baja look with this build.

We'll see if that's how it ends up going or if he changes his mind.

So, as it sits right now we have a pile of parts, a chassis and a rotted out tub.

First thing we're doing is stripping the frame, getting ready to sandblast and powder coat it. We're going to add a dual shock setup, so we need to order some parts before we send it out to the sanblaster's.

A little clean up on the frame

Pulling things apart. Some of this stuff is a little crusty, but we're going with air lockers, so we won't need some of it anyway.

This looks like a pretty good project. Maybe you can talk your father-in-law into a Detroit.

 that would be fun, but not likely. We already have the engine for it.

So, we ordered the suspension stuff yesterday. Going with a dual shock setup we got from Tom's Bronco parts, they had a complete kit (which makes it convenient) should be here in a couple of days. We also ordered the four wheel disc brake setup, lift kit stuff, power steering conversion and air locker kit.

There aren't any pictures to show, but we didn't get any of this stuff from CJ's Pony Parts, so it should all arrive in a reasonable amount of time. ;)

I also learned where the VIN is on a first Gen Bronco. Of course I had to reference YouTube.

I found it very interesting that the VIN is only stamped on the frame and isn't on a plate or anything like that on the tub.

I don't know the style of steering box. My Father-in-law ordered a kit. It's arrived, but I haven't delved into it.

In the meantime, here's a few progress photos:
