Fuel pumps going out

Postby jerrodhaas » Wed Nov 03, 2010 7:32 pm

i have a 390, not sure on the year, in my 68 ford. its my daily driver now for a little less then a year and im on my third fuel pump. does anybody know what would make them go out like that? the one that came with the truck quit last december, and the other one quit in august. when they were first put in the truck it would start right away for a few weeks, and then not so good after that. if i floor the gas pedal right when i crank it over it starts pretty good.

Do you have a fuel filter installed? If not then you might have alot of junk entering your fuel pump and causing it to go bad. You might want to remove your fuel tank and clean it out or get a new one.

i do have a fuel filter. i put a new one on with the pump. i also have the gas tank behind the seat, so i used a flash light to see in there and it was clean. somebody told me that if i stick an electric fuel pump in it will solve the problem, but im not too sure about that since it originally came with the style thats on it now.

there is a chance that your fuel line going the tank to as a hole in it that allows air into the system a fuel pump would not be able to draw fuel if it is sucking in air

also your rubber fuel lines may be collapsing from the suction check all the steel lines and replace all the rubber stuff from the tanks to the pump

yeah it could be bad rubber hoses. i was doing something on the motor one day and i had the air cleaner off. about five minutes after shutting the engine off the carb burped up about a half cup of fuel. ill check the lines and replace the bad ones.
