460 C6 2wd Conversion to 4x4

Post by Rheaghen »

I have a 2wd 1974 Crew Cab Short Bed with a 460 and recently rebuilt C6 automatic.

Last weekend I pulled my motor to do an overhaul, and now I'm reluctant to put it back in the truck as I also have a rolling chassis for a 1978 4x4 CC Short Bed.

Extra parts that I have... accumulated

T-18 with transfer case (not sure what type) from a 1978 supercab along with the front drive shaft.
I also have the clutch assembly for the T-18
Steering Column from the supercab.
a running 400/351m that I'd love to get rid of for $200

SO...

my current, likely delusional, line of thinking looks like this:

get a transfer case and Convert the C6 to 4x4
install the C6 and my 460 on the chassis
install my existing 2wd drive shaft for the rear section of the drive line
install the front shaft from the super cab.

Thanks everyone for any advice/guidance you can provide!

I have several points I'm concerned about... is a specific transfer case that I should get? I'm concerned about drive line dimensions. Are there spaceers, adapter plates, or other components that I'm not aware of that I'll need to make the drive lines meet up properly? I guess I'll find out once I get the Motor & transmission installed!

Most people want the NP205 for toughness and reliability. Only problem with it is the front output is too close for most non-automatic tranny's. I guess this is why it is "divorced" in my truck. I assume my truck has the 460 with T-18 and 205. Those parts are great as far as not breaking. You won't be able to use your rear driveline with a transfer case. You could get it cut down and rebalanced once you know your new length. The front driveline will probably be custom.

If you want to accumulate some more parts, I will sell my entire drivetrain ---motor/trans/transfer case and all drivelines and axles. :D

I'm running a married transfer case, c6 np205. To perform the conversation to the transmission, I did have to source a 78/79 4x4 optput shaft. There is a company selling new shafts (link below). I will have to address the length on both the front and rear drive lines.

I'm still not sure what lengtha I will need. After I complete the modifications, I will share the details.

Getting closer to being on the road. FINALLY got my bed properly fitted to the chassis, and a new bumper installed. LMC's "universal" brackets were less than straight forward to install. Right before I was going to send it to the drive-line shop, I found out that something's off in the motor that I had rebuilt; its getting coolant into the oil

Found a really nice steering column from a junk yard for a 78 with tilt and no slop. Found out the hard way about Neutral safety position switches. My transmission doesn't support it, and now, post steering column swap, neither does my steering column. But I did find a really cool product from Dakota digital, the GSS-3000, that will act as my NPSS and will also run my reverse lights; all for $100, and some of my time.

Next week I'm hoping to send her to the mechanic to replace the bad gasket (I hope it's not a crack) and get her running proper again. then it's off to the drive-line shop, then a new title for the chassis swap. and HOPEFULLY back on the road!

I do have some body work to do still, but I just want my bad boy back in action, its been far too long!
