Frame options for 78 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion

Postby Ruckin69 » Thu May 02, 2019 4:14 am

What are my options for shopping for a 4wd frame? I have a 78 sb cc now with a narrow frame. You would also need the title and door tag with it too correct?

good luck with getting title and door tag from a guy selling a frame only.

Just title.....door tags are reproduced by Marti.

I think you will be better off buying complete 4x4 truck and then doing conversion...instead of just a frame.

If your state requires the VIN on the frame to match the rest of the truck, then I agree with what Clever said.

What truck frames are my options for this? Do they have to be crew cab? I have a narrow frame 78 now.

Most states have some option for documenting that a frame stamped vin doesn't match the door tag.

For my 77 build I'm using a late model SuperDuty frame. I don't have a title for that frame, but I do have a notarized bill of sale with details (like the SupderDuty vin, etc.). Once the truck is done I'll take all my paperwork to the State Patrol and they will give it the OK. In my state the criteria are (once it's determined nothing is stolen) the VIN number and model year that is assigned to the vehicle is based on what year vehicle the most resembles.

Other states will have slightly varying requirements, but so far I don't think I've heard of one that has no process for this. These rules all started back in the days when kit cars and now reproductions were/are very popular.

Very similar here in Washington as well. My Uncle has a 77 F-350 crew cab that he built out of at least three different trucks back in the early 90's.

The 4X4 Chassis came from the truck he had bought new (as a standard cab) in 1974ish and then he purchased a 2wd crew cab cab and chassis from a wrecking yard and married the two together. Those two chassis plus a bunch of other parts made the truck he has now, which was inspected by the state patrol upon completion and given a title and registration.

I may be mistaken, but I think that what Ruckin69 may be looking for is which specific frames, from which specif years will fit under his truck.

I used a supercab 4wd frame from a 79 (similar year) and had it streched professionally using metal from the 2wd frame. They fishplatted the backside as well. It cost a pretty penny, but well worth it at 70 mph down the freeway towing a trailer. Title is with the cab and as previously noted save your receipts or bill of sale from seller just in case.

Good luck to ya and don't forget to post pics!

I thought the 78's and 79's had the wide frames all the way back? My 78 does....
